1861 Scottish Census

The 1861 Scottish census provided the following information:

  1. Parish
  2. Quoad Sacra Parish (a quoad sacra parish is one created and functioning for ecclesiastical purposes only)
  3. Parliamentary Burgh
  4. Royal Burgh
  5. Town or village
  6. Road or street, and number or name of house
  7. Inhabited and uninhabited buildings
  8. Full name of each person
  9. Relationship of each person to the head of family
  10. Marital condition of each person
  11. Age
  12. Gender
  13. Rank, profession, or occupation of each person
  14. Birthplace
  15. Whether blind, or deaf and dumb
  16. Number of children from 5 to 13 attending school  
  17. Number of rooms with one or more windows 

In 1861 the responsibility of the censuses passed to the newly-formed (1855) General Register Office for Scotland. The Registration Districts were used to manage the census, whereas previous censuses had been based on church parishes.
